McBain, Michigan- "Carl" Carrol R. Patterson, of Marion, passed away at Autumnwood of McBain, Friday, November 10, 2017. He was 89 years old. 

Carl was born to Thomas and Edna (Hulliburger) Patterson of Winterfield Township on August 24, 1928. He grew up on the family farm in Middle Branch Township; graduated from Marion High School in the class of 1946 He served in the US Army and married the former Faye E. Nelson of W. Va. on August 6, 1948 in Temple, Michigan. The couple bought a home in Marion where they raised their four children Vickie, Keith, Christie and Mark. 

Carl worked for Riverside Electric in Marion from its opening in 1948 until it closed in the 1970’s. He was the last employee. He also worked for St. Johns Table and Four Winns in Cadillac. 

His family would like you to know a few things about their father and grandfather. Carl Patterson played MHS football and basketball and was the Prom King in his senior year. He and high school friends, Karl Reber and Carl Raymond were life-long friends. They were known as the Three Carl’s and together with their wives shared many good times through the years, camping, riding trail and motor bikes and snowmobiles. For many years the couples met monthly for dinner. Carl Raymond survives. 

Carl grew up on a farm and in the company of brothers and he learned to fish and hunt at an early age. He knew the Middle Branch well and caught many a fine trout. He loved to small game and deer hunt and reluctantly only left the deer blind less than 10 years ago. 

Carl became a member of the Marion United Methodist Church in 1959 and spent his life being involved with his church and the community. He volunteered to help at Old Fashioned Days and local snowmobiling events. He was also a leader with the Marion Boy Scouts.

In his later retirement years he enjoyed golf with son Keith and attending the sporting events of his grandchildren. His interests also turned to his yard and flower gardens, in which he took great pride and tended with care. Carl also enjoyed walking and as long as he was able he routinely covered various routes around Marion, enjoying the flowers and lawns of his neighbors. He enjoyed coffee with his friends and neighbors at the Flashback and giving a hand to daughter Christie at the Potting Shed.

Above all Carl Patterson deeply loved his family, and they him. He will be forever missed. 

Carl is survived by his children Vickie (Jim) Harris of Greenville; Christie (Fred) Prielipp, of Marion; Mark (Andrea) Patterson of Carson City and daughter-in-law Kris Patterson of Lake City. He is also survived by his siblings Donna (John) Long of Cadillac, David (Debbie) Patterson of Lansing and Wayne (Audrey) Patterson of Clare.

He is also survived by his much loved grandchildren Cindi (Ryan) Olsen, Adam (Candi) Harris, Casey Patterson, Derek (Mandy) Prielipp, Angela (Kyle) West, Mark (Tiffany) Patterson, Amy (Adam) Browning, Josiah (Aylssa) Patterson and 13 great-grandchildren and long time family friend Phyllis Crowe.

He was preceded in death by his wife Faye in April of 2015 and his son Keith in July of 2015 and siblings Robert, Calvin, Mary and Shirley.

The Patterson family would like to thank the staffs of Belle Oakes, Autumnwood of McBain and Hospice of Michigan for the excellent care given to Carl. 

Services will be held Tuesday, November 14, 2017, at 1pm from the Fosnaught-Holdship Funeral Home in Marion with the Rev. Jim Mort officiating. Visitation will be from 11am until time of service. Memorials may be directed to the Marion Untied Methodist Church.
