Traverse City - Doris Evelyn Smith, of Cadillac, passed away on Sunday, February 18, 2018 at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City. She was 81.
Doris was born on June 22, 1936, in Filley, Missouri to Roy and Gladys (Davis) Stephens. While attending a High School football game Doris had a chance encounter with a young airman during his time on leave. That special meeting lead to wedding bells as Doris entered into marriage with Arnold D. Smith on June 24, 1956, in El Dorado Springs, MO.
Doris made a career with the former Kysor Company in Cadillac and retired after 30 years. She was a part of the New Beginnings Club where she made several friends. In earlier years she enjoyed bowling or a round of golf. She could often be found knitting, crocheting, or cheering on one of her favorite teams from Detroit. Doris loved animals and had many special cats along the way, but nearest and dearest to her heart was the opportunities she was given to be with and support her grandchildren. She will be deeply missed.
Doris is survived by her husband of 61 years, Arnold Smith of Cadillac; her daughter, Cindy (Jim) Radford of Howard City; sons, Mark Smith of Cadillac and Kevin (Mary) Smith of Canadian Lakes; grandchildren, Raymond, Anthony, Nicole and Jacquelyn; brother, Raymond Stephens; as well as many other loving family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her daughter, Carol Sue Smith; her parents and several siblings.
A memorial gathering for friends and family will be held from 2:00 pm until 4:00 pm on Saturday March 3, 2018 at the Hitesman-Holdship Funeral Home. She will be laid to rest in the spring along side her daughter at the Maple Hill Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be directed to St. Jude's Children Hospital or the Wounded Warrior Project.
