Arnold Smith Obituary

Cadillac, MI - Arnold D. Smith, of Cadillac, passed away on Sunday, April 22, 2018 at Samaritas Senior Living in Cadillac. He was 83.

Arnold was born on October 1, 1934, in Cadillac, Michigan to Leonard and Elizabeth (Herringa) Smith. While on leave, Arnold, as a young airman, had a chance encounter with a young lady attending a High School football game. That special meeting lead to wedding bells as Arnold entered into marriage with Doris Stephens on June 24, 1956, in El Dorado Springs, MO.

Arnold made a career with the former Brooks & Perkins (AAR) in Cadillac and retired after 30 plus years.  He could often be found searching for the next great coin to add to his collection or meticulously restoring old license plates.  He enjoyed tinkering or working around the house and would help family and others to fix odd jobs of their own.  Arnold had a passion for metal detecting and spent countless hours combing many of the areas parks and beaches for his next great treasure.  His heart would fill with joy by taking the opportunities, to be with, and support his grandchildren. He will be deeply missed.

Arnold is survived by his daughter, Cindy (Jim) Radford of Howard City; sons, Mark Smith of Cadillac and Kevin (Mary) Smith of Six Lakes; grandchildren, Raymond, Anthony, Nicole and Jacquelyn; as well as many other loving family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Doris Smith; daughter, Carol Sue Smith; his parents and several siblings.

A memorial gathering for friends and family will be held from 2:00 until 4:00 on Saturday, May 5th, 2018 at the Hitesman-Holdship Funeral Home.

He will be laid to rest in the spring with his beloved wife, Doris, who preceded him in death only weeks prior, as the two will be buried near his brother, Norman Smith, and their daughter at the Maple Hill Cemetery.   Memorial contributions may be directed to Wounded Warrior Project or the Cadillac Area Honor Guard.
