Carl David Brooks Jr., of Ypsilanti, formerly of the Missaukee, Leelanau, Wexford area in Michigan and also the Tampa Bay area in Florida, passed away on Sunday, July 14th, 2019 at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Ann Arbor, Michigan. He was 48 years old.
Carl was born on March 21, 1971 in Cadillac to Carl David Brooks Sr. and Pauline (Hall) Robinson. Carl was known to some as “Chef Carl’, Carl David”, “Dave” or “Tonto.” He attended Lake City High School and later became involved with culinary arts. He was a dedicated and outstanding chef for College Fresh, where he created delicious meals for many college students and other restaurants in Michigan and Florida, including Trish’s Dishes and Okeefe’s. Carl resided on the reservation in Suttons Bay, MI for a period of time and was a Native American tribal member of the Grand Traverse Tribal Band. He was an awesome and adventurous man who enjoyed life with a wonderful sense of humor. He enjoyed life and one of his favorite activities was stacking rocks with some of his close friends. Carl was dearly loved and will be missed by everyone he met. He left his friends and family with numerous cherished memories and stories of time spend with him, in which he often talked about writing a story about his life and adventures. Carl will be remembered as being a happy and full of life guy, a good and kind person, and a fearless protector. Carl was one of a kind and will never be forgotten. He was a great, loyal, and genuine friend to all who knew him and he had a special way of making everyone smile.
Carl is survived by his son, Jeremy Brooks; siblings, Kellie Dumas (sister), Chessie Dumas (brother in Law) Darlene Brooks (sister) and Duane Handcock (brother); numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews; and many other loving family and friends.
He was proceded in death by his parents; grandparents; sister, Audrey Peterson; and brother, Jeff Handcock.
A committal service will be held on Saturday, July 27th at 2 pm at the Star City Cemetery in West Branch Township of Missaukee County with Rev. Wayne VanDuinen officiating.
