George Lizenby Obituary


Cadillac, Michigan- George William Lizenby, of Cadillac, passed away on Friday, June 14, 2019 at the Curry House Assisted Living in Cadillac. He was 91.


George was born on March 24, 1928 in Lake Linden, Michigan to William L. and Hazel (Dube) Lizenby. He answered the call of duty serving in the United States Army. George was a proud graduate of Michigan Tech where he achieved a Bachelor's Degree in forestry. On April 15, 1950 he entered into marriage with the former Kathleen Roy in Lake Linden. The couple spent 59 years together until her time of passing on August 21, 2009. George began his career working for the Michigan Forestry Service as an assistant supervisor at Baraga State Forest. He later went on to spend the remainder of his career working for MichCon until his time of retirement. George had a true passion for gardening and raised over 250 different varieties of roses, even some not equipped to grow in Michigan. He enjoyed spending time outdoors and going hunting. George was a devoted founder of the Traverse City Rose Society, where he developed a unique fertilizer still used and distributed today. He was a life member of the DAV and NRA. George was also a faithful member of St. Ann Catholic Church. He cherished the time spent with his family.
 
George is survived by his two sons, William Charles (Lori)  Lizenby of Waterford and Brian John (Janette) Lizenby of Cadillac; three grandchildren, William, Nicolas (Sara), Andrew; one great-granddaughter, Nina Rose; and many other loving family members and friends.
 
He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Hazel; his wife, Kathleen; and his brother, James Lizenby.
 
Visitation will take place on Tuesday, June 18, 2019 from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Hitesman-Holdship Funeral Home. A mass of christian burial will be conducted on Wednesday, June 19, 2019 at 11 a.m. with visitation held one hour prior at St. Ann Catholic Church. Father Michael Janowski will preside. Interment will take place at Mount Carmel Catholic Cemetery with military honors provided by the Cadillac Area Honor Guard.
