Mary Alice Pickford passed away on January 11, 2019 at the home of her son Bob and his wife Beth in Lake City. Mary was born November 5, 1946 to her parents Ray and Bertha (Miller) Lawrence. She married her husband Loren Pickford on February 6 1976.
Mary was a life time member of the Lake City United Methodist Church, where she contributed many a pie for church functions. She possessed a quiet faith which she called upon often. Mary made sure her grandchildren knew the Lord Jesus Christ. She would take her grandchildren to church with her as much as possible.
Mary is survived by her son Bob and his wife Beth, her son Michael, grandchildren Cecelia, Cole, Anna, Dakota, Dreydon and Gwendolyn. Also, three great-grandchildren, T.J, Baylee and Bennett. Brothers: Milton, Carl and Howard. Loving sisters-in-law Jan, Sharon and Loretta. She is also mourned by many cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.
Mary was preceded in death by her husband Loren, her parents, an infant son Alan and her brother, Walter.
She was a breast cancer and polio survivor. Mary was diagnosed in 1953 at the age of 7 with polio. She spent an extended period of time at a polio sanitarium in Traverse City. Mary often wondered what happened to the little girl in the iron lung. Later on, in her senior years, when walking was incredibly difficult she got herself a motorized scooter. Mary had a pirate flag on her scooter. She could be seen riding into town with her flag flying high. This speaks of her strength, feistiness and sense of humor. She always enjoyed a good laugh. Mary loved giving her grandchildren rides on her scooter.
Mary was a gifted artist. Her medium of choice was oil painting. She was a charter member of the Lake City Artist Association. She enjoyed painting portraits, Santas, florals and country scenes. She was also an avid music fan. She could be seen sitting in the front row at her grandchildren’s band concerts. She spoke of playing her record player outside during summer vacation and how happy it made her. She was a big fan of Elvis and later the Beatles. She also enjoyed country music. Mary’s favorite foods were chocolate, chocolate, more chocolate and cheesecake. She could consume a bag of Hersey Kisses in no time.
A celebration of Mary’s life will be held Saturday, January 26, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. at the Lake City United Methodist Church located at 301 John Street. A luncheon will follow the service.
Cards of condolence may be sent to Bob Pickford at 301 W. Union, Lake City, Mi. 49651.
