Cadillac, Michigan- Maurice "Mac" Joseph Schopieray, of Cadillac, passed away on Wednesday, April 18, 2019 at the Curry House Assisted Living in Cadillac. He was 84.
Mac started out working at Cone Drive Gears in Traverse City before he and Gertrude moved to Reed City to eventually settle in Cadillac. He was employed at A.H. Joynt Automotive as a manager for many years leading him to buy the location in Cadillac to run for 18 years before retiring. He was an active member of the Knights of Columbus Council 1224 functioning as treasurer for many years. He was a 4th degree member of Msgr. WM Fraser Assembly. Mac enjoyed being an active member in the Knights participating in fundraiser projects for St. Ann School like pancake breakfasts, free-throw contests and spelling bees. He also served as an active member of St. Ann Catholic Church as Minister of the Eucharist and Usher. Many will remember Mac from working and calling Bingo for 52 years in the Cadillac area. A big supporter of the Cadillac Vikings, he attended basketball, football, softball and baseball games even after all his kids finished playing. He served on and enjoyed numerous committees and groups such as Us Too Prostate Cancer Support Group, Relay for Life and the Cardiac Rehab Group.
Mac is survived by his loving children, Jerry Schopieray, Jackie (Kevin) Anderson, Joan (Tyrone) Tyra, Jeff (Michelle) Schopieray, and Julie (Jeff) Hamilton ; 4 grandchildren, Haley Anderson, Alicia Anderson, Mitchell Hamilton and Jaylyn Hamilton; brother, Fred (Joyce Novak) Schopieray; sisters-in-law, Shirley Schopieray and Maxine Schopieray; and many other loving family members and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Barney and Dorothy; wife, Gertrude Ann; brothers, Bernard (Virginia) Schopieray, Patrick Schopieray and Robert Schopieray.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, April 24, 2019 from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Hitesman-Holdship Funeral Home with the rosary to be recited at 7:30 p.m. A funeral mass will be conducted on Thursday, April 25, 2019 at St. Ann Catholic Church at 10 a.m. with Rev. Michael Janowski to preside. A committal service for both Maurice and Gertrude will take place at Mount Carmel Catholic Cemetery following the mass.
Memorial contributions may be directed to Munson Healthcare Cadillac Hospital- Cardiac Rehab and Hospice of Michigan.
