Maynard "Mark" Markham Obituary

Maynard "Mark" Keith Markham of Mason, formerly of Lake City, passed away on Friday, November 9, 2018 at the Green Acres of Mason Living Center. He was 84.

Mark was born on October 14, 1934 in Lansing to Clifford and Myrtle Markham.

He was a graduate from Bath High School in 1951 and played for the 1949 football team, which was inducted into the Greater Lansing Area Sports Hall of Fame in 2007.

Mark married his high school sweetheart, the former Marilyn Peterson, in 1951 and the couple spent 51 years together until her time of passing in 2003.

He worked at Motor Wheel and was a partner at Peterson's Service Station before joining the East Lansing Police Department in 1963, where he served the community for 26 years. Mark graduated from the American Institute of Polygraph Technology and Applied Psychology in 1973. He was a skilled polygraph examiner for ELPD for 15 years and a member of the American Polygraph Association and Michigan Association of Polygraph Examiners. Mark graduated from the 129th session of the FBI National Academy in Quantico, VA in 1982 and was a life-member of the Michigan chapter of the FBI National Academy Associates.

After retiring from the ELPD in 1989 as Lieutenant in charge of the Investigative Unit, he moved to his home on Lake Missaukee, where his children and grandchildren gathered annually to celebrate the Greatest Fourth in the North. 

Mark had a full life enjoying friends, cards, golf, hunting and pontoon rides on the lake. He was an avid Spartan fan and loved when his grandchildren took him to MSU Basketball games. Mark was a member and long-time supporter of the Bath American Legion, Lake City American Legion, Lake City Eagles and he served as president of the Missaukee Golf Club Board of Directors for 2 years. He enjoyed contributing to the Wertz Warriors, sports programs, Lake City fireworks and other organizations. 

Mark is survived by his three children, Cindy (Rob) Collett of Arvada, CO, Randy (Tammy) Markham of Middletown, VA, and Melinda (Mike) Phillips of Mason, MI; five grandchildren, Ryan and Matthew Collett, Bradley Markham, Emelie and Ellie Phillips; step-grandchildren, Seana Markham and A.J Myrick; great-grandchildren, Colin, Abbie and Charli; and many other loving family members and friends.

A Celebration of Life memorial service will be held 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, July 3, 2019 at the Young-Holdship Funeral Home in Lake City with Pastor William Markham officiating.

A time of visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m. with a luncheon being served following the service.

Burial will take place in the Rose Cemetery in Bath, Michigan

Memorial contributions may be directed to the Wertz Warriors or the Alzheimer's Association-Greater Michigan Chapter.
