Theodore "Ted" Farquhar Obituary

Theodore Donald Farquhar (Ted), 91, of Houghton Lake, Michigan, passed away on December 14, 2018 at the Grayling Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Grayling, MI with his family by his side. Ted was born June 9, 1927, in Detroit, MI, to Theodore Clifford and Genevieve Elizabeth (nee Kanthak) Farquhar. He married Sally Delores Owen on April 10, 1948, at St. David’s Church in Detroit, MI; they celebrated more than 54 years of marriage before her death September 18, 2002. They raised three children together at their home in Detroit, MI.

Ted is survived by his children Ken (Pina) of Leonardtown, MD, Chris (Linda) of Houston, TX, and Karen (David) Jarvi of Grayling, MI; four grandchildren: Adrian, Jessica, Jennifer and Chris Jr.; and nine great-grandsons: Robert, Hunter, Stone, Mitchell, Aiden, Dylan, Colt, Wyatt Theodore, and Blake. His extended family includes an additional five grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. Ted is also survived by his brother Edward (Pauline) Farquhar of Macomb, MI. In addition to his beloved wife, he was preceded in death by his companion Patricia Shaheen, his brother Thomas, and his parents.

Ted served in the U.S. Army and was deployed overseas to the Philippine Islands at the end of World War II. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion. After leaving the Army, Ted worked at the Detroit Tank Arsenal. In July 1952 Ted joined the Detroit Police Department where he worked as a Patrolman and served in the Youth Bureau; he retired in February 1979 as a Detective Sergeant after 26.5 years on the force. Ted and his wife Sally moved to Houghton Lake for their retirement in 1979; he joined the Markey Township Volunteer Fire Department and served the Department for 23.5 years ending his tenure in 2008 as the Assistant Chief.

Ted was an Eagle Scout and distinguished Boy Scout Leader and led Troop 20 sponsored by the Detroit Police Department’s 5th Precinct. In 1970 he received The Silver Beaver Award from the Boy Scouts of America for “his many years of community service, hard work, self-sacrifice, and dedication to make an impact on the lives of youth.” Ted was a life-time member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles, and served as President for the East Detroit Aerie #2495 and after moving to Houghton Lake served as Conductor for the Houghton Lake Aerie #3201. Ted was also a life-time member of the Knights of Columbus and was Installed as a 4th Degree Knight in April 2010.

He was well known for his love of old movies and was a train enthusiast and model railroader. Ted enjoyed listening to opera and organ music, camping and hunting and was licensed as a short-wave radio operator. He is remembered by his family for his quick wit and sense of humor, as well as for his ability to fix or repair just about anything.

Funeral services are scheduled for Tuesday December 18, 2018 at 1 pm with Rev. Father Peter Eke to officiate. Burial will be in Crestview Cemetery, Markey Township. Visitation is scheduled for Monday December 17, 2018 from 4-7 pm at Christler Funeral Home-Prudenville Chapel. In-lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to the Markey Township Fire Department.
