Edward William TenHouten, of Cadillac, passed away on Sunday, November 10, 2024 at his home in the loving arms of his wife. He was 93.
Ed was born on March 22, 1931 to Charles and Gianetta (Pray) TenHouten in Saugatuck, Michigan. After completing high school, Ed went on to answer the call of duty, serving in the United States Air Force. Ed spent his time in the service stationed in both Texas and Germany from 1956 until 1958, serving as a "JAG" Judge Advocate General. He attended Duke University, Michigan State University, and University of Michigan, where he received his Doctorate of Law degree. Ed was passionate about his career and continued to practice law until he was 90. Throughout the years, he served many different positions as a prosecutor, probate attorney and city of Cadillac attorney for 30 years. He proudly owned his own private practice and served the Cadillac community for many years, until his time of retirement. On August 5, 1995 he entered into marriage with the former Denise (Budds) LaForest in Mackinac Island, the couple continued their tradition of visiting the island every year on their anniversary. Ed liked to jot down special memories from throughout his life, and even composed his own biography to share for future generations. He enjoyed spending the mornings at coffee with his friends, telling stories and sharing local news. In his spare time, he loved boating on the big lakes, playing Texas Hold 'Em, and collecting and driving classic cars. Ed was proud of numerous accomplishments throughout his life, including setting a Traverse City High School 440 track record, developing real estate including AAA Storage, the strip mall, and several subdivisions in Cadillac West, working as an oil and gas developer, and growing Christmas Trees. Ed was active in the community and was involved in several clubs around town, he served as the former president of Cadillac Kiwanis Club, a former member of Cadillac Country Club, and was a member of the Elks, AmVets, and the Moose. He liked making special trips and vacations to visit and socialize with his family and friends.
Edward is survived by his loving wife, Denise TenHouten; son, Edward Sherman TenHouten ; step-children, James (Wendi) LaForest and Deidra (Tom) Tracy; grandchildren, Jamie and Dylan LaForest, and Bjorn and Piper Tracy; great-grandchildren, Charlie Marie Swanson, and Makayla, Ava, Aiden and Tricia Bronkema; brother, Warren (Maria) TenHouten; and many loving friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Gianetta TenHouten; two daughters, Terri Ann Swanson and Sherri Lee Snider; grandson, Nicholas David Swanson; sister, Katie Proctor; and a half brother, Chuck TenHouten.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, November 16, 2024 at 10 a.m. at Hitesman-Holdship Funeral Home. Military Honors will be provided by the Cadillac Area Honor Guard. Friends and family are welcome to a Celebration of Life at the Elks following the memorial service. Interment will take place at Maple Hill Cemetery.
