Erma F. Stevens, age 94, of Houghton Lake passed away on Thursday August 26, 2021 at The Brook of Houghton Lake.
Erma was born on March 23, 1927 in Mt Clemens, Michigan to Henry and Hulda (Schalm) Huckenhirn. She graduated from Mt. Clemens High School and attended the University of Michigan earning a B.S. degree in Chemistry. After six years of employment at Dow Chemical Company Erma returned to the University of Michigan for post-graduate study. After earning her M.A. degree & PhD degree in Comparative and International Education, she was employed at Eastern Michigan University as a Professor of Education & Director of International Studies. She retired from Eastern Michigan University as a Professor Emeritus. She moved to Houghton Lake in 1982.
Erma was a member of St. John Lutheran Church, St. John Ladies Aid, Lutheran Women's Missionary League, University of Michigan Alumni Association, University of Lutheran Chapel Ann Arbor Alumni Association, honor societies, Phi Kappa Phi and Pi Lambda Theta, and several professional societies. Erma served for seven years on the Board of Directors and as Treasurer for St. John Lutheran Church.
Erma was predeceased by her parents, husband Thomas and step-daughter Sandra Jarrett. She is survived by her step-daughters; Barbara Scott and Patricia (Scott) Stephenson, nephew; John (Carole) Lohrstorfer and niece; Karen Anderson, five grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
Funeral Services for Erma F. Stevens will be conducted at 11:00 am on Tuesday August 31, 2021 from St. John Lutheran Church with Rev. Paul Kruse officiating. Interment will be in Clinton Grove Cemetery, Clinton Twp.. Visitation will be held on Tuesday August 31, 2021 from 9:00 am until the time of the service at St. John Lutheran Church of Houghton Lake. Memorial contributions in memory of Erma are asked to be directed to St. John Lutheran Church. Christler Funeral Home-Houghton Lake Chapel is serving the family.
