John "Chub" Kregear Obituary

Merritt - John "Chub" Lee Kregear, Longtime resident and community staple of Merritt, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, February 13, 2024. He was 65.

Chub was born on March 26, 1958, in Clare, Michigan to Lester C. and Beverly A. (Marsh) Kregear. He grew up in the area and attended Lake City Area Schools. He wore many “hats” in his lifetime, fixing cars, drilling oil rigs, building/repairing log homes, making log furniture and finally manning Kregear’s Party Store.

He was a lifelong and die hard Detroit Lions fan, and was often found getting amped up and very animated as he cheered them on, it was no wonder he had heart trouble!  Chub enjoyed watching NASCAR, sports or a good western movie, but what he loved most was shooting the breeze and helping his customers. It was very seldom you wouldn't find Chub behind the counter at the store, if you didn’t have the money, he would “float” you, and he always made sure kids didn’t leave empty handed. He made everyone feel special, loved and accepted. If you were lucky enough to receive his kindness, please pass it on, if you are able.   John, Chub, Papa will be missed by his loving family, many friends, store patrons, and the Merritt community alike.  Remember him every time you travel M-55 and pass by the storied four corners where he made such an impact.

John is survived by his loving children,  Kaycee Kregear and Adam Kregear, all of Lake City; five adored grandchildren, Grace, Cody, Alden, Jake, Logan; his brother, James "Jim" (Shirley) Kregear of Falmouth; his sister, Jeri "Sis" L. (Matthew Maule) Kregear of Cadillac; as well as so many more.  He was preceded in death by his parents, Beverly and Les.

Per his wishes cremation has taken place, there will be no funeral, because he warned he wouldn’t even be there and made his friends promise not to come either. His urn will be placed with family at Butterfield Township Cemetery in Merritt at a later date.  Please direct memorial contributions to someone in your path that could use a little kindness and compassion.
