Obituary

Lawrence A. Porath “Larry” 86, died May 2, 2023, in his Leesburg, FL home in the presence and comfort of his family following a long and brave battle with cancer.

A family graveside service will take place in Roscommon Township Cemetery and a celebration of life at White Pine Pavilion will be held at a later date. Arrangements were handled by Christler Funeral Home-Prudenville Chapel.

Larry was born April 14, 1937, in Chelsea, the son of Lawrence and Regina Porath. He and Janet Ann McCully were married September 13, 1958 and enjoyed 64 years together building a business, raising a family, and enjoying life.

Mr. Porath, appreciating the experiences life had to offer, made the most of every situation with a positive attitude and a mischievous sense of humor.  He owned and operated Larry’s Service Center in Jackson from 1963 to1974 a business that started as a gas station and quickly evolved into lawn, snowmobile and RV sales.  In 1974, Larry and Janet moved north and purchased Johnson’s Rustic Resort, which they maintained for several years and gained many repeat customers they considered friends.  Shortly after, they also started Porath Contractors which they operated and expanded for over 25 years before retiring and enjoying new adventures.  A humble man, he was proud of his accomplishments, and those of his children and grandchildren but always strived to do more.  He was known to live life to its fullest.  Known as a hard-working, kind, honest, generous, fun and caring man, he made friends easily.  He is already greatly missed by his family and friends.

Preceding him in death were his parents, his brothers and their spouses Royce (Margaret), Warren (Rosetta), Donald (Mary),  and nephews Larry and Warren Jr. Surviving in addition to his wife are their eight children, twenty grandchildren, twenty-two great grandchildren, his brother Harold (Joan) of Munith, many nieces and nephews and many friends especially his best friend; his dog Yogi.
