Lester Barnes Obituary


Mesick - Lester Lloyd Barnes, of Mesick, passed away at home on Monday, April 7, 2025. He was 92.

Lester was born to Lester and Vera Barnes on August 30, 1932. After graduation from Mesick School he joined the Navy, serving during the Korean War. On June 14,1953 he married Barbara Wilkerson in Lanett, Alabama.  After leaving the Navy Lester worked for Pennwalt Corp. as a dental repairman, sales manager, and manager of a group of dental supply stores. Upon retirement he and Barbara purchased and operated Mesick Hardware until 1996.  Lester enjoyed helping people and was very active in the community.  He served as Wexford County Commissioner for 12 years. Lester also served on the Board of Public Works, District Health Dept #10, Northern Lakes Community Mental Health, Agency Area on Aging, Wexford County Council on Aging and NW MI Council of Governments. He was chairperson of the Department of Veteran Services and an active member of Mesick Lions Club. Lester attended Colfax Community Church.

Lester is survived by his wife of 71 years, Barbara; daughter, Laurie Barnes; son, Tony Barnes; nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews and many friends.  He was preceded by his son, Byron Barnes; his parents, Lester and Vera Barnes; in-laws, Emmett and Sabie Wilkerson; brothers, Robert, Donald and Richard; and his sister, Ivadean.

Visitation for friends and family will begin with Military Honors at 6pm on Saturday, April 12, 2025 at Hitesman-Holdship Funeral Home in Cadillac, concluding at 8pm.  Funeral services will also be held at the funeral home on Sunday, April 13th, at 2pm with visitation one hour prior. Pastor Ben Pike and Pastor Gary Elder will officiate. A luncheon will follow at Antioch Township Hall located at 4490 N. 19 Road in Mesick. Graveside committal services will be held at Antioch Township Cemetery.  In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Colfax Community Church, 2010 East 16 Road, Manton, MI 49663.
