Maureen Otterson Obituary

Maureen Clair Otterson, 87, of  Houghton Lake passed away on Tuesday March 10, 2020 at Lighthouse of Roscommon Health and Rehabilitation Center.

Maureen was born on September 28, 1932 in Detroit, Michigan to Clair and Eileen (Lane) Otterson. Maureen grew up in the Detroit area where she graduated from high school and went on to receive her Masters Degree in Education from Michigan State University and then her Doctorate in Education from Wayne State University. From 1953 to 1956 Maureen served her country with the U. S. Air Force during the Korean War.  Maureen worked as a teacher for East Detroit Schools starting in the elementary school and later being the Reading Specialist in the high school. She went on to be an elementary Principal for 5 years. Maureen was a member of Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church where she was active in many church activities.  In her younger years she loved to go horseback riding, and was an avid skeet shooter and is still a member of the Houghton Lake Sportsman Club. Maureen enjoyed knitting, gardening and music, she was a beautiful singer.

Surviving Mrs. Otterson are her two sisters, Sharon (Billy Dean) Mowery of Houghton Lake, and Coral Hutira of Greenwood, SC; nine nieces and nephews, Larry, Susan, Keith, Colleen, Karen, Nancy, Diane, David, and Michelle; several cousins.  Maureen was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Larry; special friends, Pat Long, and Beth Christensen. 

Mass of Christian Burial for Maureen Clair Otterson will be conducted at 11:00 AM on Saturday March 14, 2020 from Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church with Fr. Peter Eke officiating. Interment will be in Roscommon Township Cemetery, Houghton Lake. Visitation will be held on Friday March 13, 2020 from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm at Christler Funeral Home, Houghton Lake Chapel.  Memorial contributions in memory of Maureen are asked to be directed to Children International, 2000 E.
