Michael Odell Van Haitsma, of Falmouth, passed away on Monday, July 14, 2025 at his home with his loving wife by his side. He was 72.
Mike was born on December 28, 1952 in Drayton Plains, Michigan to William and Dorothy (Perry) Van Haitsma. He married his current wife, Norma (Edmiston/Schau) on February 22, 2000 in Ashville, North Carolina. Mike is survived by a daughter, Lisa (Francisco) Morones, from a previous marriage, and a step-daughter, Christina Hamilton of McBain, MI, along with 5 grandchildren and 6great-grandchildren.
He was the third oldest child with two older sisters, Cathy (David) Quilliam of Falmouth and Shirley (Churck) Graham of Interlochen; a younger sister, Deb (Tom) Crouch and a younger brother, Tim Van Haitsma, both of Houghton Lake; two brothers-in-law, Jon (Betty) Martinez of Middleville and Daniel (Marcia) Martinez of Lake City; and five sisters-in-law, Dolores Crawford of Falmouth, Charlene (Dan) Sutherby of Houghton Lake, Katherine Hart of Lake City, Marjory (Rob) Near of Battle Creek and Phyllis (Charlie) Bonham of Falmouth.
Mike attended public school in Drayton Plains, MI and from there enlisted in the United States Army, where he attained Green Beret status. After his time in the military, he worked at Waterford Township Schools as a supervisor of the Secondary Building and grounds from 1973 until 1977. From there, Mike went to work for Consumer's Energy in Houghton Lake and later transferred to Cadillac as a lineman in charge, retiring after over 30 years. he worked several years with the IBEW Contract workers in several states on hurricane duty. In later years, he began to realize how truly he had been blessed by God through his family and he felt very honored to "plant seed" about God to those whom he knew.
Per his wishes, cremation has taken place and no services will be held at this time.
