Philip Schaut Obituary


Lake City, Michigan- Philip Morgan Schaut, of Cadillac, passed away on Thursday, January 31, 2019 at Whispering Pines Assisted Living in Lake City. He was 82.


Phil was born on October 3, 1936 to Louis and Edna (Niquette) Schaut in Powers, Michigan. He answered the call of duty serving in the U.S. National Guard and Air Force from 1954 to 1960. Phil entered into marriage with the former Carol Ann Horn on April 26, 1958 in Clovis, New Mexico. He started his career in Los Angeles, California driving street car and city bus. In 1968, the family moved to Phil's hometown of Escanaba, Michigan. There, he was employed as a rate clerk at Clairmont Transfer Company for 17 years. Later, Phil and Carol relocated to Cadillac, where he operated a concession stand for 15 years working with Don Hower Auctioneers. Phil never met a stranger making many friends with whom he enjoyed bowling, cards, and church softball. He loved spending time outdoors boating, fishing, camping with his family; and, traveling all across the United States. He especially enjoyed the cruises he and Carol took to the Caribbean, Alaska and the Mediterranean. A highlight of the Mediterranean cruise was a 3-day visit to Rome including the Vatican. Phil and Carol spent many years as snowbirds, spending their winters in Gulf Shores, Alabama. He was an active member of Cadillac Moose serving as Governor in the past, former member of Escanaba AmVets serving as Commander, and active member of Cadillac AmVets. He was a faithful member of St. Ann Catholic Church. Phil cherished the time he spent with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.


He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Carol A. Schaut of Lake City; children, Kenneth Dale (Sharon) Schaut of Cadillac, Kathleen Marie (Mike) Adamson of Kenosha, Wisconsin, and Daniel Anthony (Carrie) Schaut of Muskego, Wisconsin; grandchildren, Shaun Whatley, Jeremy (Angie) Whatley, Jane (Micah) Stedman, April Adamson, Steve (Amanda) Schaut, Adam (Sarah) Schaut, and Dustin Schaut; great-grandchildren, Eden, Patton, JohnReagan, Anderson and Caroline Stedman; Derek and Lucas Schaut; Nate and Jackson Whatley; and Caleb Schaut; siblings, Patricia McMartin of Essexville, Leo (Patti) Schaut of Grand Rapids; Oakman John Schaut of Kent, Washington, Mary (Chuck) Snyder of Escanaba, Joy (Mike) Ott of Escanaba, Robert Schaut of Iron Mountain, and Dorothy Martin of Texas; in-laws, Marina Schaut, Ellen Schaut, Andi Horn, and Jim (Barbara) Horn; and many other loving family members and friends.


He was preceded in death by his parents; siblings, Karen Schaut, Billy Schaut, Caroline "Jane" Schaut, Daniel Schaut, Thomas Schaut, and Richard Schaut; and in-laws, Chuck McMartin, Barbara Schaut, and Louis Horn.


Visitation will be held on Monday, February 4, 2019 at Hitesman-Holdship Funeral Home from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. with a Loyal Order of the Moose Ritual to be presented at 7 p.m. and a Visitation Prayer Rite to be conducted at 7:30 p.m.


Funeral services will be conducted on Thursday, February 7, 2019 at St. Anne Catholic Church , 817 S. Lincoln Road, Escanaba, MI 49829, at 11 a.m. with a visitation held from 9 a.m. until the time of services.


Interment will take place at Holy Cross Cemetery in Escanaba in the spring with military honors.


The family would like to thank the staff of Whispering Pines Assisted Living and Hospice of Michigan for the compassionate care shown to Phil in his final months.
