Phyllis Irene (Callicoat) York, age 93 of Prudenville, died on March 16, 2026, at home.
Phyllis was one of ten children born to Clifford & Gladys (Massie) Callicoat on April 17, 1932. She was born and raised in southern Ohio. She attended Waterloo High School and received a Bachelor's Degree in elementary education from the University of Rio Grande. She began her teaching career in Fairborn, Ohio. This is where she met her husband Joseph, who was in the US Air Force at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. They were married in August 1956. The couple later moved to Detroit for two years. They moved back to Rio Grande, where Joe graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Secondary Education in 1961.
In May 1959, their son Shawn was born. Phyllis taught for 3 years in Gallipolis, Ohio, 5 years in Fairborn, and 27 years in Warren Consolidated Schools. Upon retiring in 1988, the couple moved from Troy, Michigan to their cottage at Houghton Lake.
Phyllis is survived by her son Shawn York, two beautiful granddaughters, Alexandria (Travis) Polk, and Melissa (Darwin) Nichols; great-granddaughter, Jean, sisters Edna Puthoff, Faye (Carl) Payton, Alma Fern Miller, and Nancy (Joe) Shuff. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband Joseph in 2016.
As requested, Phyllis will be cremated and buried with her husband at White Chapel Cemetery in Troy. The family is deeply grateful for the life she lived and blessed to have shared with her.
