Richard Shutter Obituary

Richard E. Shutter, age 87, passed away peacefully on April 3, 2026, in Libertyville, Illinois. He was born on June 9, 1938, in Chicago, Illinois, to Herbert and Delores Shutter.

Richard lived a full and adventurous life marked by service, dedication, and a deep love for family and community. He proudly served as a Deputy Sheriff in Roscommon County, Michigan, and was an active member of the local water rescue team. His commitment to helping others extended beyond his official roles—he was always known as a kind and helpful neighbor who could be counted on in times of need.

A man of many passions, Richard was a skilled pilot and found joy in the outdoors. He spent countless hours boating, snowmobiling, and fishing—especially with his beloved grandchildren, who affectionately called him “Pirate Grandpa.” He also served on Ski Patrol at Skyline in Michigan, combining his love for adventure with service to others.

Richard had a zest for life that showed in his hobbies and interests. He was an enthusiast of firearms, RV travel, motorcycles, and fast cars. At home, he enjoyed cooking, becoming well-known among family and friends for his delicious spaghetti sauce and chili. He also loved watching movies and spending quiet time with those he cared about.

He was actively involved in the Roscommon County GOP and remained engaged in his community throughout his life.

Richard is survived by his children: Dawn Shutter, Richard (Debbie) Shutter, Debbie (Gary Jaeger) Shutter, and Tracey (Jim) Heidecker. He was a proud grandfather to seven grandchildren and a great-grandfather to two great-grandchildren, a sister-in-law, nieces, and nephews. He also leaves behind his beloved cat, Merle.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Herbert and Delores Shutter; his brother, David Shutter; and his aunt, El.

Richard will be remembered for his strength, generosity, sense of adventure, and the deep love he had for his family. His legacy lives on in the many lives he touched and the memories he created with those who knew him. He will be dearly missed.
