Robert "Bob" Zavitz Obituary

Robert "Bob" G. Zavitz, 88, of Prudenville, passed away on Sunday, August 31, 2025, at his home surrounded by his loving family.

Robert was born on December 15, 1936, in Houghton Lake, Michigan, to Russell and Capatolia (Wickham) Zavitz. He graduated from Houghton Lake High School in 1956, then joined the United States Army in 1957. Robert served as an Army Specialist. While away in Germany, Robert married his high school sweetheart, JoAnn Meigs, in 1958. He was in the 12th Infantry and was in charge of explosives and demolitions. Bob was then transferred to the 16th Infantry, where he was assigned to be a personal driver and translated German for General Doly. After being honorably discharged, Bob started a career in construction and became a land developer. He was a member of the Houghton Lake Wesleyan Church, as well as the VFW, the Eagles, the Elks, NRA, and DAV. One thing Bob loved the most was family and friend time.

Surviving Robert Zavitz are his loving wife of 67 years, JoAnn "Jody" Zavitz of Prudenville; two sons, Jay Zavitz of Houghton Lake and Bobby Zavitz of Houghton Lake; daughter, Christie (Todd) Peters of Grand Rapids;  seven grandchildren, Sheri (Marc) Woolery, Stacie TenEyck, Matthew Peters, Amber (Elliot) Johnson,  and Evan; three great-grandchildren, Isaac, Caleb, and Elijah Woolery; Robert was preceded in death by his parents, brother, James Zavitz and brother-in-law, James Meigs. 

Funeral Services for Robert G. Zavitz will be conducted at Christler Funeral Home-Prudenville Chapel on Sunday, September 7, 2025, at 1:00 PM with Rev. Bryan Thompson officiating. Interment will be at Roscommon Township Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Sunday, September 7, 2025,  from 12:00 PM until the time of the service.  Memorial contributions in memory of Robert are asked to be directed to the Disabled American Veterans (dav.org)
