Lake City - A devoted father, grandfather, veteran, and true lover of Michigan’s great outdoors, Ronnie Martin LaForest, of Lake City passed away at home with family by his side on Sunday, January 25, 2026. He was 72.
Ronnie was born on February 22, 1953, in Pontiac, Michigan to Ernest and Nora (Martin) LaForest. He graduated from Milford High School in 1971, and in 1972 moved with his family to Northern Michigan, a place that quickly became a part of him and his forever home. A proud United States Navy veteran, Ronnie served his country with honor aboard the USS Beaufort and was also stationed in Hawaii, where he discovered the game of bowling and continued playing for years following his Naval League.
Michigan’s outdoors were where he felt most at peace - canoeing with family, fishing in the warmer months, ice fishing through the winters, and gathering around bonfires with loved ones. A good cold Busch Light or a smooth whiskey, shared with friends under the stars, was one of life’s simple pleasures he truly cherished. He was a loyal supporter of Michigan sports, never missing a chance to cheer on UofM, the Detroit Tigers or his beloved Detroit Lions, win or lose.
Above all else, his greatest joy was his family. Nothing meant more to him than his daughter, his grandchildren, or his favorite feline friend, "PJ", who was never far from his side. He will be remembered for his service, his laughter around the fire, his love of the outdoors, and the unwavering devotion he had for his family.
Ronnie is survived by his loving daughter, Shelby LaForest of Lake City; two grandchildren, Kyleigh and Tristan LaForest; his brother, Wayne LaForest; sisters, Patricia (Gary) Schwach and Linda LaForest; his partner in crime PJ; as well as many other loving family members and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Alan LaForest.
Per his wishes cremation has taken place and private family celebration of life will take place at a later date. Memorial contributions may be directed to The Parkinson's Foundation.
