Ruth Margaret Fowler, 96, of Houghton Lake passed away on Sunday January 11, 2026 at The Brook of Houghton Lake.
Ruth was born on February 18, 1929 in Lansing, Michigan to Earl and Irene (Iler) Taylor. She grew up in Lansing and graduated from Lansing Eastern High School. On September 19, 1947 in East Lansing, Ruth was married to Francis Henry Fowler. The couple went on to raise three daughters in their Grand Ledge home, two of which where twins. Ruth worked as a Secretary for Grand Ledge Public Schools for many years before retiring. The family built a cottage on the mainland at Higgins Lake, and later built a cottage on Treasure Island in Higgins Lake. After retiring the couple moved from Grand Ledge to Higgins Lake and in 2000 they moved to Houghton Lake. They were members of the Treasure Island Association and the Higgins Lake Boat Club. Ruth enjoyed oil painting and gardening. She was an excellent bowler, and a great cook. Ruth loved boating on both Houghton Lake and Higgins Lake, and even had her own Jet Ski. She was always known as a perpetual mother, always offering food, a blanket, or whatever you needed to make you comfortable, even giving you the shirt off her back..
Surviving Mrs. Fowler are her two daughters, Carolyn Meyer of Houghton Lake, and Christine Fowler of Mount Pleasant; two granddaughters, Amelia Pavelka, and Sarah Pavelka; two great grandsons, J D Helmstetter and Dylan Pavelka; son-in-law, James Pavelka of Traverse City; son-in-law, Dale Arbour of Mt. Pleasant; sister, Beatrice Shareghi of Marshall; nieces and nephews. Ruth was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Francis Henry Fowler; daughter, Susan Pavelka; and sister, Donna Layman.
A Celebration of Life Service for Ruth Margaret Fowler will be conducted in the spring. Interment will be in Pleasant Ridge Cemetery in Coe Township, Isabella County. Memorial contributions in memory of Ruth are asked to be directed to the Roscommon County Meals on Wheels Program, Houghton Lake Public Library, or Roscommon County Salvation Army.
