Steven Mead Obituary

Steven A. Mead, 75, of Houghton Lake passed away peacefully on Wednesday December 24, 2025 at home with his loving family by his side.

Steve was born on June 3, 1950 in Ypsilanti, Michigan to Jack and Elizabeth (Bedwell) Mead. He grew up in Garden City and moved to his dad's hometown of Merritt, in 1962.  In 1967 at Prudenville Steve was married to Carolyn Burtis. Steve worked as an Electrical Engineer for Consumers Energy retiring in 2005. Steve was known around town as a man of his word, and a handshake that you could take to the bank. His love of classic cars started at a young age and led him to purchase an out of business Thunder Bird Business.  Steve then built a 1957 T-Bird from the molds he purchased with the business, along with several more kit cars.  He restored many classic vehicles, none of which he enjoyed more that is 1953 GMC Truck, which he restored more than once over 40 years of having the truck. Upon his retirement Steve and Carolyn took his classic 1953 GMC truck and a small travel trailer and spent six weeks on Route 66 exploring every town and their history, a trip they had been planning to do for many years. Steve raced at Merritt Speedway in the 1970's, and then again, 20 years later with his son. You could often find Steve hanging out at Lewis Brothers Collision, sharing ideas, stories, and working on projects. He was a member of the Lions Club, and President of the Houghton Lake Little League, where he was able to get the boys and girls leagues certified so they could participate in tournaments for the first time in Houghton Lake history.

Surviving Mr. Mead are his loving wife of 58 years, Carolyn Mead of Houghton Lake; two sons, Scott (Amy) Mead of TN, and Matt (Cassandra) Mead of NC;three grandchildren; two great grandchildren;  three brothers, Tim (Sally) Mead of FL, Sam Mead of Grayling, and  Todd (Jan) Mead of AR; two sisters, Joy (Jim) Houghton of Harrison, and Kathy Williams of Grayling; several nieces and nephews.  Steve was preceded in death by his parents; and his infant son, Steven Mead.
