Vernon Reed Harris

Vernon R. Harris, of Lake City, passed away on Thursday, July 2, 2026 at his home with family by his side. He was 89.

Vernon was born on January 6, 1937 to Crayton and Julia Ann (Williams) Harris. Vernon answered the call to serve his country with honor in the United States Army. Following his military service, he returned home and, in 1977, married the love of his life, the former Laura Hess, in Sterling Heights, Michigan. Together they built a life centered on love, family, and hard work. After returning to civilian life, Vernon began a distinguished career with General Motors, where he dedicated more than 37 years of service before retiring. His strong work ethic, reliability, and commitment earned him the respect of his coworkers and friends. Vernon found his greatest joy in the outdoors. He loved hunting and fishing and was especially talented at carpentry, always willing to lend a helping hand or build something for those he loved. He was also a proud member of the Lake City Eagles, where he enjoyed the fellowship and friendships he formed over the years. More than anything, he cherished the time spent with his family, creating lasting memories through holidays, gatherings, and everyday moments together. 

Vernon is survived by his loving wife, Laura Harris of Lake City; children, Evelyn Hawkins, Cindy Saunders, Stacy (Tina) Harris, Kimberly (Paul) Saville, Wendy (Michael) Sronce, Audrey (Willy) Leeuw, Amanda Osenroth McMahon (Tyler), and Russell (Rachelle) Harris; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; brothers, Lowell Harris and Gary (Debbie) Harris; several nieces and nephews; and many other loving family members and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Crayton and Julia Harris; and several siblings and in-laws.
  
A Gathering will be held on Wednesday, July 8, 2026 from 2 p.m. until 5 p.m. at Young-Holdship Funeral Home.
