Virginia Christine "Vergie" Kalis, 93, of Clarissa, Minnesota and formerly of Houghton Lake passed away on Friday October 12, 2018.
Virginia was born on February 10, 1925 in Detroit, Michigan to Cazimer and Helen (Bogdan) Krynicki. Virginia grew up in the Detroit area; marrying Fredrick John Kalis on August 17, 1946. The couple then moved to the Houghton Lake area where they owned a gas station and Virgie spent many years as a custodian at Houghton Lake Community Schools. She owned the Nottingham Bar at Houghton Lake until her health would not allow her to continue. The past two years she spent with her daughter in Minnesota. Virginia was a member of Houghton Lake Eagles, VFW Auxiliary, American Legion Auxiliary, and Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church. She enjoyed Crafting, and making things, but most of her time was spent on the job, her work time spanned 75 years, from the age of 16 until the age of 91.
Surviving Mrs. Kalis are her daughter, Gail Marquedant of Clarissa, MN; son, Keith (Suk) Kalis of CA; seven grandchildren; twelve great grandchildren; two sisters, Eleanor Schultz of Galesburg, and Sally Crine of GA; several nieces and nephews. Virginia was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Fredrick J. Kalis, two sons, Paul and Robert; brother, Cazimer; two sisters, Stella and Aurelia.
Mass of Christian Burial for Virginia Christine Kalis will be conducted at 11:00am Thursday October 18, 2018 at Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church with Fr. James Doherty officiating. Interment will be in Roscommon Township Cemetery. Visitation will be held at the church from 10:00am until the time of the Mass. Memorial contributions in memory of Virginia are asked to be directed to the Houghton Lake Eagles. Christler Funeral Home, Houghton Lake Chapel is serving the family.
