Ardis George Vance

April 11, 1928 ~ October 12, 2018 (age 90) 90 Years Old


Ardis George Vance, 90, passed away from complications of a stroke Friday, October 12, 2018 at St Joseph’s Mercy Hospital in Pontiac, MI.

He was born April 11, 1928 at the Ardis family farm near Merritt, MI to I. Roy  and A. Marjorie (Ardis) Vance. He graduated from Merritt High School in 1946, and Michigan State University in 1954 after serving in the army for several years.

 Ardis married Elaine Shackelton of Stittsville, MI on June 25, 1953 before beginning his electrical engineering career at Collins Radio Company in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

He moved back to Lake City, MI in 1976 and has been very active in his church, and community, using his electrical, carpentry, and repair skills, as well as his people skills. He was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church, the Social Services board, Habitat for Humanity, Friends Ministry, and Clam River Prayer Project. He taught well-researched adult Bible Studies, and was Chairman of the Deacon board.

He loved to travel with his children, and fulfilled a longtime dream of visiting his grandfather’s home in Ireland 2 years ago.

He is survived by his 5 children, Gaylen (Carol) Vance of Solon, Iowa, Gloria (Galen) Yoder of Wellman, Iowa, Carol (Karl) Hagen of Alma, Anita (Dan) Buck of New Paris, Indiana and James (Renee) Vance of Port Huron; 22 grandchildren: Ben, Jacob, Samuel, Kari Vance; Caleb(Beth), Rebecca, Maria(Matt Swartzentruber) and Nicole Yoder; Kristyn, Kyle, Korey, Karalyse Hagen; Willy, Andy, Amanda, Laura (David Zastrow), Peter, Wally, Isaac, Ben and Sammy Buck; and Joshua Vance; 2 great-grandchildren, Austin Ardis Yoder and Lydia Swartzentruber; and brother-in-law Doug Shackelton.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, 3 brother-in-laws and 3 sister-in-laws: Donald (Frances) Shackelton, Winnifred (Harold) Wagner, Rita Shackelton, and Gordon Shackelton.

Visitation will be Thursday, October 18 from 5-7 at Young-Holdship Funeral Home in Lake City. There will also be a visitation at 10 am Friday, October 19 at Calvary Baptist Church in Lake City with funeral to follow at 11 am. Pastor Brian Algie will officiate. Burial will be in Aetna Township Cemetery.
