Karl Gene Mead , age 89, of Vogel Center passed away at his home August 27, 2014.

Gene was born December 11, 1924 in Detroit to Harold G. and Anna Marie (Wright) Mead.

He married the former Edna Jean Armstead in Cadillac on December 18, 1948. She preceded him in death May 4, 2011.

He enjoyed playing baseball in high school and graduated from Merritt High School in 1944.
Gene was a veteran of the US.Army serving during World War II. He was employed as a press operator for the Hydromatic Division of General Motors and retired after 25 years and moved back to the Missaukee County area in 1982.
He enjoyed hunting and fishing and spending time with his grandkids.
He and Jean were always involved in canning and enjoyed traveling together.
He instilled the love of baseball into his children and grandchildren.
Gene loved to read and his favorite pastime was watching Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy.
He belonged to the Merritt Golden Agers and attended the Merritt Butterfield United Methodist Church and was a member of the Marion VFW.

Gene is survived by his children Karla (Michael) Labbe of Las Vegas, Nevada, Alice (Don) Chrispell of Merritt and Harry (Janine) Mead of St. Helen, 9 grandchildren, 12 Great Grandchildren and 1 Great Great Granddaughter.; his brother and sisters Pete (Chub) Mead of Grayling, Peggy Briggs, Chaska, MN and Sara (David) Nettle of Merritt and many nieces and nephews.

He was also preceded in death by his parents, a son Richard Alan, two brothers Harry Lee and Jack and a sister Thelma Jan deMontigny.

Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m., Saturday, September 13, 2014 at the Merritt Butterfield United Methodist Church with Rev. Jeff Schrock officiating. Visitation will be Friday, September 12, 2014 from 3:00 until 6:00 pm at the Young Funeral Home in Lake City.

Burial will take place in the Aetna Township Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be directed to the Merritt Butterfield United Methodist Church or the Marion VFW Building Fund.
